Northen family papers, 1832-1944.

This collection consists of the papers of Peter Northen, William Jonathan Northen, Mattie Nell Northen, Annie Belle Northen, Thomas Henry Northen, Mattie Traylor Northen, William Jonathan Northen, Jr., Ruth Northen, and George Traylor Northen. In addition to family correspondence, the collection contains photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, and other papers belonging to the individual family members. Also included are genealogical materials collection by Mattie Neel Northen and Annie Belle Northen. The collection contains a group photograph of the kindergarten of Willette A. Allen, Atlanta's first kindergarten, which was founded by Miss Allen in 1885. The correspondence mainly concerns family, relating to personal and family matters, religious affairs, and social life. Some are from related families, such as the Neel and Traylor families. Annie Belle Northen's letters during her father's governorship tell of social affairs, such as the reception for President Benjamin Harrison. The letters of December 8 and 13, 1887, comment on Jefferson Davis and family during their visit to the State Fair in Macon, Georgia. Other letters include those of Hjalmar East, who had a hospital at Haka, Chin Hills, Burma; Walter E. Wiatt of the American Baptist Mission at Moulmein, Burma, 1904-1908; and Dr. Fred P. Manget of the Huchow General Hospital, Huchow, Chenkiang, China, 1930-1939. There are many letters from George T. Northen to his family from training camp and overseas, 1917-1919. There is a letter from President Theodore Roosevelt to W.J. Northen, April 11, 1908, regarding Roosevelt's stand regarding equal accommodation for African Americans on railroads. The papers are arranged as follows: general correspondence of family and friends, followed by papers of individual members of the family. Next come papers on schools, churches and places, deeds and other legal papers, photographs, genealogies, and scrapbooks.

Peter Northen (1794-1863), the first o the Northen family in Georgia, was born in North Carolina; he moved to Georgia at a young age. He served as a private in the War of 1812. In 1817, he married Louisa Maria Davis (1799-1881), the daughter of Abner Davis of Jones County, Georgia.
